A basic unit in society is called a family. This is where a home begins, as it continuously building and expanding physically and emotionally. In a basic unit or a family, one is able to find a sanctuary where it comprises of both physical and emotional support. At home (family), one finds rest, is at ease and is comfortable and peaceful. According to the American Psychological Association, home is a platform of nurturing as one matures physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially. It is where basic cultural values are transmitted. Children are offered love, acceptance, appreciation, encouragement and guidance. They are provided the most intimate context for developing personalities and identities. The amount of emotional attachment one feels to a home is dependent on the environment and ties one is brought up with. This affects a person's way of how he or she responds in relationships when he is hurt/separated by loved ones. This form of self-actualization is mentioned in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs* as the highest attainable objective of anybody's motivation. Self actualization is the realization of one's personal potential, self-fulfilment and personal growth. Home, is therefore, a place of self discovery.
